Acute lung injury research: are we doing the right things?

Symposium
Chairs: Rory Morty (Bad Nauheim, Germany), Masao Takata (London, United Kingdom)
Aims: To very critically re-evaluate various aspects of current basic and translational research in acute lung injury (ALI). It will scrutinise potentially fundamental flaws in the present ALI research, i.e. the quality of our preclinical science, adequacy of our academic environment, strategies for linking preclinical studies and clinical trials, and validity of our target itself. The symposium intentionally encourages bold, stimulating and challenging arguments and discussions between the speakers and the audience, to be facilitated by the chairs. It will generate an ethos across the international scientific community in this field, to make serious efforts in a consorted fashion towards real progress in effective translation.
Target audience: Scientists and clinicians in the field of respiratory and critical care who are interested in the basic mechanisms of acute lung injury (ALI) and the clinical translation for these mechanisms into therapies for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
