To improve the competence and performance of clinicians by promoting their active learning of empathic communication and motivational interviewing and by helping them to develop strategies to incorporate these techniques into patient care. This interactive learning activity will focus on how to effectively counsel patients to improve their overall lifestyle, including their diet, exercise and alcohol and tobacco use. Specific aims are as follows: to increase knowledge about empathic listening and motivational interviewing strategies and resources; to increase skills in using empathic listening and motivational interviewing strategies; and to increase the application of empathic listening and motivational strategies and resources.
