Aims: This is the first course in a three-year postgraduate core curriculum covering the main issues in respiratory physiology. The aims of this first module in the series are:
• to identify recent advances in lung volume measurements in infants, children and adults;
• to describe physical principles underlying lung volume measurements;
• to better understand the use of lung volume measurements in clinical practice;
• to describe the quality control and limitations of lung volume measurements.
